About Clos du Val 

Located in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley, Clos du Val was co-founded by French winemaker Bernard Portet and American businessman John Goelet in 1972. The winery is renowned for producing elegant Bordeaux-style wines and it gained fame for its 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon, which received high scores in the legendary 1976 “Judgement of Paris”. And 10 years later in 1986, the same wine won first place in a repeat competition, solidifying Napa Valley’s place on the world wine map.

Clos du Val owns several vineyards in Napa Valley, including Stags Leap District, Yountville, Carneros. The winery prioritise vineyard balance and site specificity, with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and classic Bordeaux varieties planted to reflect the Stags Leap terroir. Soil health and canopy management are emphasized to produce grapes with measured ripeness, structure, and aromatic clarity.

The winery’s winemaking philosophy is deeply influenced by its French roots. Unlike many Napa Valley wineries that pursue a concentrated style, winemaking at Clos du Val privileges elegance and restraint over brute power. The cellar techniques favor careful extraction, moderated use of oak, and blending decisions that prioritize balance and length. Clos du Val’s signature wines are Bordeaux‑style blends anchored by Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon that show red and black fruit, refined tannin frames, floral and mineral lift, exhibiting a balanced, delicate style with great aging potential.
