About Gaja

Gaja is an artisan winery located in the stunning Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy. Its Barbaresco and Barolo wines stand as beacons of excellence around the world. Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, this family-run winery has grown into an internationally renowned establishment. Known for its dedication to quality, tradition, and innovation, Gaja has produced high-quality wine with refining winemaking methods, including lower yields, green harvest, short maceration, and barriques ageing. Over the decades, Gaja has earned a global reputation for its wines with distinctive character and finesse.

The Gaja family has cultivated 250 acres with great care. Since 1859, Gaja Barbaresco DOCG has been a testament to its enduring legacy, being the flagship wine that has delighted connoisseurs for generations. When Angelo Gaja joined the family business in 1961, he brought with him a vision that propelled Gaja wines to international acclaim. His innovative approach, including the introduction of international grape varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to the Piemonte region, has added a delightful modern twist to the traditional winemaking practices of the Langhe area. The success of the Barbaresco crus—Costa Russi, Sorì Tildìn, and Sorì San Lorenzo—since the 1960s, further cements the Gaja family’s reputation for excellence.

The Gaja family’s journey, however, extends well beyond their origins in Piedmont. In the 1990s, they acquired the Pieve Santa Restituta estate in the Montalcino area of Tuscany. This 40-acre estate is dedicated exclusively to cultivating Sangiovese grapes, showcasing their commitment to excellence in Italian winemaking.

Not stopping there, the Gaja family further expanded their presence in Tuscany with the purchase of the Ca’Marcanda estate in Bolgheri. Covering 150 acres, this estate reflects Gaja’s innovative spirit and willingness to embrace diversity by introducing a range of international grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah.

With Angelo Gaja passing the mantle to his children, Gaia, Rossana, and Giovanni, have been keeping their wines shine with excellence. This success is due to their unwavering commitment to quality, a forward-thinking approach, and a strong focus on sustainability. Gaja continues to be celebrated as a benchmark of excellence in the world of fine winemaking.
