About Lou Dumont

Lou Dumont was founded by Japanese Koji Nakata and his Korean wife in Nuits-Saint-Georges of Burgundy, France in 2000, and has since moved to Gevrey-Chambertin. Nakata was originally a sommelier at a French restaurant in Japan. Because of his love for Bourgogne wines, he had the idea of ​​making wine in Burgundy.

Lou Dumont is actually a maison. Grapes are bought from other growers, and then fermented, matured, bottled and sold under Lou Dumont’s name. Although the vineyards producing the fruit do not belong to Nakata, most grape growers are willing to allow Nakata to enter their vineyards to harvest the grapes himself. This allows Nakata to better understand the ripeness and quality of the grapes and to sort the bunches.

Nakata became friends with the legendary Henri Jayer, the “god of Burgundy wine”. Jayer even visited Lou Dumont to share experience and offer advice to Nakada. Nakata has integrated the winemaking philosophy of Jayer into his wines: sky (weather), earth (soil/land) and people (grape growers and winemakers) are fused together, so that the wines of Lou Dumont not only have the meticulous attention to detail of the Japanese, but also the wine traditions and expertise of the French.

The Japanese manga “Drops of God”, which is popular all over the world, has introduced Nakata and the wines of Lou Dumont.

In addition to running Lou Dumont as a maison, Nakata and his wife established their own estate, Domaine Koji et Jae Hwa, in 2012. The domaine has its own vines. The vineyards are plowed with horses and have been farmed organically since day one. They were certified organic in 2016 and biodynamic viticulture is implemented (not certified) in 2018.

The maison wines are labeled orange and with the Chinese characters “天地人”, while the domaine wines take white labels.
