About Prophet’s Rock

Until recently, Central Otago was the world’s southernmost wine region. This small area is protected by mountains and has New Zealand’s unique semi-continental climate. It produces “cool climate” wines and is considered one of the leading wine regions for Pinot Noir and cool-climate white wines.

Located in Central Otago, Prophet’s Rock was established in the late 1990s and launched its first wine in 2003. The winery makes wine from grapes only grown on its own estate vineyards, producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, and a very small amount of Muscat and Gewurztraminer.

Paul Pujol, winemaker at Prophet’s Rock, studied viticulture and enology in university and worked in France (and Oregon, USA). He has worked as winemaker at 6 different Grand Cru vineyards in Alsace. In Burgundy, he worked at the famed Comte Georges de Vogue in Chambolle-Musigny. Paul also worked for Domain Henri Bourgeois in Sancerre, Loire Valley. After returning to New Zealand, Paul joined Prophet’s Rock in 2005.

Prophet’s Rock’s philosophy is respect, patience and vineyard-focused – allowing the wines to freely express the unique terroir of the vineyard sites. The winery uses minimal intervention and minimal extraction approach to winemaking, allowing the wines to express the beauty of the place rather than pronounced winemaking characters.

Prophet’s Rock also collaborates with Francois Millet, esteemed French winemaker from Chambolle-Musigny of Burgundy, to produce two special cuvees in New Zealand: one is Pinot Noir and the other is Chardonnay wine. Francois was the winemaker of the famous Comte George de Vouge and was responsible for 35 vintages. All winemaking processes for these two special cuvees are directed by Francois.
