About Domaine Daniel Dampt & Fils
Domaine Daniel Dampt is the eponymous estate founded by Daniel Dampt. It is located in Milly, an old village in Chablis, and is now managed by Daniel’s two sons, Vincent and Sébastien. Daniel’s father-in-law is Jean Defaix of the well-known winegrowing Defaix family in the Chablis region. Vincent and Sébastien inherited superb traditional Chablis winemaking knowledge and skills from their father and grandfather-in-law.
The domaine harvests grapes mechanically. Fermentation and maturation take place in stainless steel tanks. This doesn’t look special and may give the impression of mass-production (at the expense of quality). In fact, this is not the case. Domaine Daniel Dampt has been recognized by famous Burgundy wine expert, praising that the quality of its wines can be very good, countering the image of “mass production”. The estate knows the terroir of its vineyards very well and carefully produces wines that exceed ordinary standards. Its Chablis 1er Cru Côte de Lechet and Vaillons are examples. Chablis village wines are often blended with fruits from some old vines to enhance the flavor. When vinifying Chablis Grand Cru Preuse, one-quarter to one-third of oak barrels are used for fermentation.
Vignoble Dampt is another branch of the family, separate from Domaine Daniel Dampt, and is a Maison (outsourced grape) business.
